Light Academy 2018
As part of the ELEKTRON Light Academy, another exciting lighting seminar took place in Bern on November 29, 2018. Four experts from ELEKTRON AG and Luminum GmbH spoke on the topics of safety, digital networking, planning and operational management of public street lighting.
About the ELEKTRON Light Academy
Technological change offers new opportunities for the planning, management and maintenance of lighting infrastructures. In order to use the new possibilities profitably, we have been committed to knowledge transfer in the lighting industry since the beginning of 2017 within the framework of the Light Academy. Current trends are covered as well as basic planning and maintenance expertise - depending on the seminar topic with corresponding content focuses.
At the start of the Academy event in Bern, Peter Schwägli (Managing Director Lighting, ELEKTRON AG) welcomed the participants and introduced the seminar with an exciting insight into the current topics of future-proofing and sustainability.
Light and safety
Jörg Imfeld, head of the Light Academy, kicked off the seminar. In his presentation, he dealt with the topic of light and safety.
"Safety with light does not exclude sustainability"
As part of the road infrastructure, public lighting serves to ensure safety. At the same time, the careful handling of light immission is becoming increasingly important. In the presentation, Jörg Imfeld showed the legal and normative aspects and gave a brief insight into the topic of light emission.
Future-proofing street lighting
The digital networking of public lighting is advancing at an enormous pace. Thanks to a standardized, manufacturer-independent interface between luminaire, light controller and external sensor technology, the luminaire is becoming the sensor platform for future smart city applications.
"Standardized interfaces offer flexibility and investment security"
Independent of the initial situation of a municipality or city - for the entry into the digitalization of street lighting, standardized interfaces such as the System Ready architecture form the basis. Using various practical examples, Frank Koster showed how the new possibilities can be used profitably. Always with a focus on "demand-driven, energy-efficient street lighting".
The optimal planning for a community
Public lighting is more complex than it appears at first glance. It involves more than just the road itself. This complexity can be an obstacle on the one hand, and an opportunity on the other.
"Making the most of light with expert planning"
Philipp Hert, Managing Director/Lighting Designer, Luminum GmbH
Philipp Hert gave an exciting insight into the planning and management of public lighting systems in his presentation. In particular, he pointed out important aspects that are often forgotten:
- Data analysis and inventory
- Concept development with electrical and lighting design
- Implementation of a refurbishment
- Management and digital operations management
Afterwards, Jörg Imfeld delved into the topic of "Digital Operations Management" and showed the potential for public lighting using the example of CityTouch. He showed how the combination of lighting control and resource management in one software simplifies processes and enables the use of synergies. At the same time, data quality is optimized through the seamless history of all activities and changes.
Operational management and regulations
When refurbishing street lighting, people often only think about the luminaire itself, but not the pole. What condition are the masts in? Where are the weak points? What can be done to extend the service life?
"Those who renovate sustainably do not only think about LED"
Paul Togni spoke on the topic of refurbishing lighting infrastructures with a focus on light poles. The main focus was on the applicable standards, safety aspects and refurbishment measures. He provided information on the current legal requirements and went into more detail on everyday problems in the area of dimensioning light poles. In addition, he gave an overview with regard to protective measures, control as well as rehabilitation in case of corrosion of light poles.
ELEKTRON AG would like to thank Philipp Hert, Luminum GmbH for the exciting contribution as well as all participants of the Academy event in Bern.
