ELEKTRON AG is an innovation partner in the Smart City Lab Basel

  • ELEKTRON AG tests together with lighting manufacturer Signify and SWISSTRAFFIC intelligent lighting and traffic control systems in the Smart City Lab Basel Wolf. Thanks to the joint use of high-quality sensor technology, new, innovative concepts are being developed.
  • Tenants on the Wolf Areal benefit from a traffic-dependent lighting control system that ensures energy efficiency and safety.
  • The intelligent area lighting from ELEKTRON AG also forms the basis for comprehensive IoT networking in the Smart City Lab Basel.

Au Zurich - ELEKTRON AG and its technology partners Signify and SWISSTRAFFIC are setting up a test facility for new infrastructure solutions at the Smart City Lab Basel. Leading smart city system integrator ELEKTRON AG has already been working intensively on the digitization of outdoor infrastructure for several years. The opportunity to jointly test new solutions and bring them to market maturity was decisive for ELEKTRON AG's decision to participate in the Smart City Lab Basel.

Intelligent combination of light and traffic

The joint use of sensor technology and the cross-application use of data are the focus here. A high-precision laser sensor from SWISSTRAFFIC is used on the site. The sensor classifies different vehicles according to the Swiss 10 scheme, pedestrians as well as cyclists. The traffic and movement data collected in the process are transmitted to the Smart City platform in real time and analyzed.

"With the intelligent traffic information generated in this way, cities and municipalities gain significant added value in terms of traffic data for planning tasks or congestion forecasts."

Alain Bützberger, COO SWISSTRAFFIC

Thus, the high-quality traffic data will be used both by SWISSTRAFFIC for future-oriented traffic concepts and by ELEKTRON AG for traffic-dependent lighting control on the site.

But that is just the beginning

Intelligent area lighting forms the basis for further smart city applications. Equipped with standardized interfaces for sensors, luminaires become the supporting infrastructure for smart solutions:

"Audio sensors, LoRa gateways as well as sensors for intelligent parking systems are just some of the solutions we want to test in the future. The Smart City Lab Basel offers us ideal conditions for implementing our ideas and visions."

Enrico Baumann, CEO ELEKTRON AG

About the Smart City Lab Basel

The canton of Basel-Stadt and the SBB signed a planning agreement in 2018 to develop the Wolf into the smartest area in Switzerland. The "Smart City Lab Basel," which the two cooperation partners will open on April 10, 2019, sets a first milestone. The Lab offers space for smart city pilot projects and allows to work together on new and better solutions in the urban context.

About ELEKTRON AG

The leading Swiss technology company is actively engaged in the energy and infrastructure market for resource minimization by increasing energy efficiency. As a competent integrator, ELEKTRON AG combines individual customer needs with the appropriate technology partners. This is how intelligent solutions for efficient systems are created in the business areas of drives, electronics, payment systems, smart city and lighting.

As a market leader in street lighting, ELEKTRON recognized early on that luminaires offer far more than just light. In addition to branching out from the center to the neighborhoods, street lighting brings with it ideal prerequisites for becoming the carrier infrastructure for smart applications. This is how smart cities are emerging today around the digital light point.
