Unique innovation from Wädenswil - by sharing traffic data, street lighting is regulated according to effective traffic volume

  • ELEKTRON, Signify and EKZ support the Energy City of Wädenswil in taking the next step towards a Smart City.
  • The approach of cross-sectoral use of existing traffic data is unique in Switzerland.
  • The use of sensor technology for existing traffic measurement makes it possible to adapt the light on the road to the effective traffic volume in accordance with standards. This increases the safety of road users and reduces energy consumption. At the same time, residents and nocturnal animals are less disturbed by nighttime dimming than before.
  • Traffic information now converges in the superordinate Smart City Data Platform. Wädenswil receives with the open platform the flexibility to add more smart services and smart city applications simply at a later date.

Au (ZH), 22.01.2019 ELEKTRON, Signify (formerly Philips Lighting) and EKZ are teaming up with the city of Wädenswil and using existing traffic data to regulate street lighting on Seestrasse south of the train station. The energy town in the district of Horgen was deliberately selected for the pilot project; it is already actively on the way to becoming a smart city.

Intelligent networking of the urban infrastructure has been an issue in Wädenswil for some time. Initial measures such as the clear data visualization (Smart City Cockpit) and the multifunctional light pole (Smart City Tower) in the city center, which in addition to light also supplies electricity for electric cars, collects environmental data and provides a public WiFi network, were already implemented in fall 2017.

Smart City Tower, Wädenswil

Since that time, constant traffic measurement has also been taking place at the Smart City Tower by means of a thermal image sensor. This information is used by the municipal civil engineering office to record and optimize traffic. Now the traffic information runs via an open interface (API) into the Wädenswil Smart City Data Platform. Here, the data is evaluated and forwarded to Signify's CityTouch lighting management system. The result: the brightness of the street lighting is regulated depending on the effective traffic volume, in accordance with the requirements of the new street lighting standard EN 13201.City President Philipp Kutter is delighted with the intelligent street lighting:

"It is another step towards a more efficient use of our resources and a higher quality of life."

Unique innovation, sustainable investment

The shared use of the collected data by different offices within a city is entirely in line with the philosophy of smart governance. Enrico Baumann, CEO and member of the board of directors of ELEKTRON AG, is therefore convinced "that this unique smart service stands as a good example for the development towards a smart Switzerland". The Smart City Data Platform gives the Energy City of Wädenswil the flexibility to introduce further Smart Services and Smart City applications at any time when it is ready. Future security is guaranteed.
