The Swiss Museum of Transport was opened on 1 July 1959 after two years of construction and quickly became the most visited museum in Switzerland. In 1969, Switzerland's first and still only large planetarium, restaurant and office building were added. The Aerospace Hall was added to the ensemble of exhibition halls in 1972. Between 1979 and 1985, the Hans Erni Museum, the second hall for rail transport with the covering of the former open-air railway area and the Shipping, Cableways and Tourism Hall were built. In 1996, a further extension was completed with the integration of the film theatre. For the 50th anniversary in 2009, the iconic Road Transport Hall and the redesign of the entrance area with conference centre, catering and shop were added. The Swiss Chocolate Adventure (2014) and the Media World (2016) complete the comprehensive offer of the Swiss Museum of Transport.
